This song is not on one of our records. But we are very proud of the way it turned out. This song was written for and submitted to the movie Heaven’s Fall. The movie is the true story of nine African Americans wrongly convicted and imprisoned for assaulting a white woman on a train in 1931 Scottsboro, Alabama. This one is sung by the song’s co-writer and our friend Scott Chaney. We also submitted it to a contact at the Southern Poverty Law Center. We narrowly missed getting it into a documentary they were finishing up…that film won the Oscar for best documentary. The song references some of the story line for the movie within the context of an overall statement on racism in society in general.

Everyday we all use the first two words in the phrase to describe things we’re fond of…pizza, beer, baseball, etc. It’s the third word, ‘you’, that gives the phrase its real meaning. We happen to have a female version of this song…we were in the studio when Gretchen Wilson, the Redneck Woman, sang the demo a year or two before she hit it big

This is one of the earliest Nashville compositions written by The Readings, and along with Wanda’s Song, is still considered one of the most honest and real tunes they’ve created.

One of Those Days
This song was inspired by the loss of our mother, Bonnie, to cancer (you can read a bit about that in the “About” section of this website). Although it is about a person who is terminally ill with cancer, it is very much a song about living. She lived every day to its fullest, right to the very end; that’s the message of this song. We have been fortunate enough to play this song for thousands of cancer survivors and supporters at various American Cancer Society functions. Each time, it never fails to illicit a great response. We’ve had countless survivors tell us that it perfectly captures the emotions and experiences they encountered during their struggle. We have been so inspired by the people this song has touched that we are writing a book to go along with it. Please stay tuned; we think you’ll want to read it.

Just as She Brings Me Down is a father/daughter song, this is a father/son tune. This song addresses the common experience of most boys. At some point, when they’re young, Dad is Superman. Just a few short years later, he couldn’t be more uncool, or easier to dislike. And then one day, you wake up, and you realize you’ve become him…and the cycle is beginning again. This was a fun one to write. The difficult part was writing a chorus, where the lyrics didn’t change, but the message worked for both the positive image and negative feelings about dad. We think we achieved it, and conveyed a good message, and a relatable story.

We did take certain liberties to make the story flow. His grandparents were actually married in the back of a department store on a Friday night, after closing time. That is such a great part of the story that it was tough to lose it, but we had all kinds of trouble getting “Woolworth’s” to fit with our melody, rhymes, and syllable count.

Eventually, we were able to come up with the good image of him walking a long distance to town, then shining his dusty shoes before they got married at the courthouse. But there really is a brother ‘Earl’, and Randy’s grandmother did wear a blue wedding dress. The baby, Randy’s Mom, wasn’t actually born in June (but it rhymes with two, you know), but her Dad did build the house himself—with a little help from friends and family.

This was a nice one to finish, a nice tribute to Randy’s grandparents.

This was the first song we wrote when we moved to Nashville. It took a long time to write, many sessions, many hours. We didn’t have a very concrete idea for the story when we started. It started out with the hook “If that is all you see, then you don’t see me”, basically saying that people often look at superficial things, instead of really trying to get to know someone. Initially the story was very complicated. Too complicated. When we finally settled on the taunting/teasing idea, we were able to make it work better. The three of us knew people in our childhood who Wanda represented. And we could relate to the experiences of the main characters. It was cathartic to write this song and make a statement denouncing the kind of behavior that put Wanda in the place she finds herself. We are particularly proud of the bridge to this song—we think it’s one of the strongest we’ve ever written. Also, it’s the most interesting song we have musically, thanks to the acoustic groove John Paul Lourence came up with, with the verses in a minor key, and the chorus in a major key–it gives the song the funky feel it has. Rusty Danmyer and Larry Franklin nailed the dobro and fiddle parts respectively, really enhancing the recording. The process of writing this song was a good reminder that it often helps to have a fairly strong concept of the direction of the song before you begin writing—it usually makes the writing sessions much less frustrating.

This song started out with Chris’s hook ‘Love’s Gone South’ and his idea that the girl had moved south, leaving her guy behind. The literal and figurative interpretation of “gone south” seemed like a good thing to work with…It took some time to come up with the idea that the couple had taken a trip to Miami together and she had fallen in love with it and left him. But once we had that, the idea for the pictures (the ‘double prints’ line…a JP gem), Raul, the lifeguard, and her belated postcard, all flowed nicely. When we reached that point, the story was basically complete; we just had to fill in the words.
